I’m travelling in a ferry to the west of Scotland to visit family today, and our summer holidays are mostly behind us, which made me think of my brother and his converted van and all the trips he was planning.
My brother’s converted old van was red like this one in the picture!
This poem came from a prompt in Beth Kempton’s Soul Circle Beth Kempton and I thank her and the participants for their heartfelt writing which always pushes me to be more honest with my words.
So, that’s it for this week - a very short, unedited poem of sorts.
Let Me Tell You About David
Summer came and he wasn’t in it.
He’ll always be summer to me. The giant oak tree with its curly verdant plumage, hedges brimming with green pointed leaves and colourful blooms, bending with the speed of a red van rushing past. The loudest birds for the longest hours as the gas stove is set up outside the open doors. Sun and shadow playing on the rocky mountain side as coffee is sipped, a van parked up facing the late Scottish sunset.
Back home, checking the progress of potatoes in his allotment, moaning about how many more dishes with courgette can possibly be cooked and eaten.
Following a long day of physical toil, evenings with the dog by the local shore.
My brother.
Summer came and he wasn’t in it.
That’s all for this week folks, have a good one.
With love, from Jackie in the Little Writing Corner in Scotland x x x
